This special town grew in the first half of the nineteenth century as the southern "Queen of the Watering Places". The springs resort first became the standard summer destination for wealthy Virginia Low Country residents seeking reprieve from heat, humidity, and disease of the "sickly season". As its popularity increased and it gained status as a socially exclusive site, the springs attracted elite guests from all areas of the South.
The resort which is featured on this mug is now known as The Greenbrier and remains one of the country's most luxurious and exclusive resorts.
Make time for an afternoon to visit White Sulphur Springs! A few new establishments in the town include Road Hog’s BBQ, Sugar Bear’s Toy Store, The Local Wine Shop, Hammer Cycles, ACE Hardware, and the recently reopened This & That Collectibles. All of these places share a commonality which is to see the people of WSS thrive.
Fun facts: The town of White Sulphur Springs is named for its famous mineral springs, whose curative powers were first reported in 1778. According to one legend, in that year rheumatism sufferer Amanda Anderson was brought to the springs in a litter slung between two horses and left riding horseback after a few weeks' treatment.
